Card counting is a technique where a player keeps track of which cards have been dealt and uses that information to make better betting decisions. The technique is legal but the methods a player uses to employ it can result in removal from the casino.
The underlying principle is straightforward. High cards (10, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace) are favorable for the player. Low cards (2 through 6) are favorable for the dealer. A shoe with more high cards remaining means the player has better odds.
A card counter tracks the composition of the remaining deck to determine when the odds favor the player.
The Basic Count
The simplest counting system is the Hi-Lo count. High cards (10 through Ace) are assigned a value of minus one. Low cards (2 through 6) are assigned plus one. Medium cards (7 through 9) are neutral (zero).
As the dealer deals cards, the counter adds the values mentally. If ten 10s and two 2s are dealt, the count is (negative ten) plus (positive two) equals negative eight.
When the count is negative, the remaining deck is rich in low cards. The player bets less.
When the count is positive, the remaining deck is rich in high cards. The player bets more.
This is the essence of card counting.
Converting to True Count
The running count is biased by the number of decks remaining. A running count of plus ten in a six-deck shoe is less significant than a running count of plus ten in a one-deck shoe.
The counter divides the running count by the estimated decks remaining. This is the true count.
If the running count is plus twelve and approximately three decks remain, the true count is plus four.
The true count determines the player's edge. A true count of plus one means the player has a slight edge. A true count of plus three means the player has a better edge.
The Casino's Detection Problem
Casinos know that card counting is theoretically possible. They have implemented multiple countermeasures.
First: continuous shufflers. If cards are shuffled after every hand, there is nothing to count. Many casinos use continuous shufflers specifically to eliminate counting.
Second: penetration limits. Casinos deal only a portion of the shoe before reshuffling. If they deal 50 percent of the shoe, a counter gains information about the remaining 50 percent for only a few hands before the reshuffle.
Third: surveillance. Casinos watch for betting pattern changes. If a player bets small and then suddenly bets large, the casino notices. Consistent correlation between bet size and a high count trips alerts.
Fourth: heat. Casinos ask counters to leave. This is legal. The casino can refuse service to anyone.
The Actual Difficulty
Card counting sounds easy in theory. In practice, it is mentally demanding and emotionally difficult.
The mental demand: you must track cards while maintaining cover. You must act like a casual player while mentally calculating. You cannot show excitement when the count is good. You cannot show sadness when the count is bad.
The emotional difficulty: variance is real. Even with a positive true count, you lose hands. A lot. A counter must accept losses without letting emotion drive them to abandon their strategy.
Why Most Counters Fail
Most people who attempt card counting underestimate these difficulties. They memorize the count system and think they are ready. Then they sit at a table and discover that counting while playing is much harder than counting while studying.
Second, they get detected and removed. The casino's countermeasures work. A player making obvious betting pattern changes will be asked to leave.
Third, they do not have adequate bankroll. Variance can produce negative results for weeks or months. A counter without substantial capital will run out of money before the edge materializes into profit.
The Modern Reality
Card counting is harder now than it was in the 1980s. Continuous shufflers and low penetration have made it nearly impossible at many casinos.
A dedicated counter can still find games with shoe penetration over 60 percent and careful surveillance. But these games are rare.
For the recreational player wondering whether they could count cards: probably not. The casinos' countermeasures are effective. And even if you could beat detection, you would need bankroll that most people do not have.
